INTRODUCTION – Review “UNDERSTANDING THEME” pp. 316-321
The learning focus is for the student
1). to read for information and comprehension. This short story is an example of fiction that conveys a clear theme
2).To be able to explain the difference between a topic and theme.
3).Student should set a PURPOSE for READING: “Think about how people define ‘community’ and whether or not, community can extend beyond local boundaries?”
READ: p. 338 – The focus question, “What makes a community?” is intended to help the reader focus on a central idea in the material they are about to read. What does the author want you to learn about this topic?
LESSON:
THEME is the message about life &/or the human experience the author wants the reader to take away from his/her reading.
*** Go to p. R109 in the glossary section of your book to look up the definition of THEME. RECORD this definition in your notes. From the glossary section differentiate the author’s message as theme, recurring themes, and universal themes. RECORD these definitions in your notes.
CONNOTATION of words refers to the impact a word choice has on the reader.

1). p. 339 TEXT ANALYSIS: “Multiple Themes” - - read and record this section -- What does it tell you about the influence of setting? character motivations and relationships? and how conflicts arise and are resolved.? 2). p. 339 READING STRATEGY – Monitor your understanding – This story is a bit tricky; Pay attention to the relationships between the characters, their conflict, and the setting. These are keys to understanding the THEME(s). p. 339

Power Pont Slides and your own written notes. ALL will be submitted to Mrs. Mergner for a grade. Class presentation will also count as a separate grade.
Directions: Read the Book your prophet wrote that is included in the Old Testament. Identify the way in which the people of this Time and Place are offending God. Identify the MESSAGE of the prophet to the people that is sent by God and intended for their spiritual good. HOW ( what is the style/manner in which) does the prophet communicate God’s message to the people? What does he do to get the people’s attention? Is the prophet accepted or rejected by the people? If he is ACCEPTED – what do the people do to show God they have changed their ways and want to be found pleasing to Him once again. If he is REJECTED – what is the punishment that God inflicts on the people? What happens to the prophet at the end?
